Background. This change happened more than 90 days ago. It is kept as a dated record; check current prices before relying on any figure below.
What changed
On June 20, 2024, TechCrunch reported that SpaceX had begun offering the Starlink Mini, a compact dish “small enough to fit inside a backpack” with the router built in, at $599 for the kit. TechCrunch described that as “$100 more than the standard Starlink kit” at the time.
| Item | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Mini kit | Not sold in the US | $599 |
TechCrunch said SpaceX was “offering a limited number of the Starlink Mini Kits to start for $599.” It gave the weight as about 2.5 pounds with its kickstand and quoted download speeds of over 100 Mbps. We don’t test hardware; those are the report’s figures.
Who it affected
- New buyers who wanted a portable kit. Before this, the only US option was the larger Standard kit.
- Existing customers were not affected; nothing changed on their bills.
What it did to the cost
It added a hardware option, not a cheaper one. At launch the Mini cost more than the Standard kit, so a buyer choosing it for size paid a premium up front. The monthly plan is a separate charge, chosen at checkout.
TechCrunch’s report also described a Mini-specific data plan. We don’t repeat its figure here: a September 2024 report from RV Mobile Internet listed that plan, “Mini Roam,” at a different price, so we can’t confirm what it cost at launch (September 2024 post).
What stayed the same
- Standard kit pricing and Residential plan prices were not part of this announcement.
What happened next
The Mini’s price fell several times. It was offered at $199 for some orders in January 2026 (January 2026 post), and the starlink.com “starts at” price was cut to $149 on October 2, 2026 (October 2026 post). Our price history has the dated rows.
What to check yourself
- Today’s Mini price is on our prices page. Mini setup and power questions are outside this site’s focus.
- If you’re comparing kits, the equipment cost guide lists what each kit includes.
What we don’t know
- How many kits were in the first “limited number,” and when the Mini became generally available.
- We could not open a June 2024 capture of starlink.com; figures are as reported.
