What changed
On July 28, 2026, RV Mobile Internet reported that Starlink had added a 12-month financing option for the Mini when bought with a Roam plan:
| Item | Cash | Installments |
|---|---|---|
| Mini kit | $199 once | $16 a month × 12 = $192 |
| APR | n/a | 0%, “no finance charges” |
The installment total is $7 less than the cash price. The report said you can switch between Roam plans or put the service on Standby without triggering early payment.
The key condition: “canceling Starlink service before the 12-month installment period is complete makes the full remaining balance due immediately.” This is a purchase paid over time, not a rental. You own the Mini at the end.
Who it affected
- New Mini buyers on any Roam plan.
- Residential customers were not offered this in the report; it was tied to Roam.
What it did to the cost
It spreads the year-1 hardware cost rather than cutting it much:
- Year 1 with Roam 100GB at the May 2026 price of $55: cash path $199 + $660 = $859; installment path $192 + $660 = $852. Monthly, the installment path is $71 for 12 months.
- Year 2 onward: identical, since the Mini is paid off.
- If you cancel in month 4: you have paid $64 and owe the remaining $128 at once, so the hardware total is still $192.
Where it helps is cash flow, not total price. Run both in the calculator.
What stayed the same
- Roam plan prices (Roam 100GB $55, 300GB $80, Unlimited $175 at the time).
- The Mini’s $199 cash price in the same report.
Also in the same report: Standard kit for Roam
The same article said the Standard dish became orderable again with Roam plans at $349 after being taken off about a month earlier. We cover it separately: Standard kit back on Roam orders.
What happened next
In October 2026 the Mini’s price was cut to $149, which brought the monthly installment down too (October 2026 post).
What to check yourself
- At checkout, check whether the installment option shows for your order and read the cancellation terms.
- Compare cash and installment totals over the months you expect to keep the service; the equipment cost guide covers shipping and other one-time lines.
What we don’t know
- Whether there is a credit check; the report doesn’t say.
- Whether the plan is offered at retail stores; it was described for starlink.com orders.
- We could not open a July 2026 capture of the checkout; figures are as reported.
