Background. This change happened more than 90 days ago. It is kept as a dated record; check current prices before relying on any figure below.
What changed
On March 7, 2026, Not a Tesla App reported that Starlink had stopped Standby Mode from working while moving. Users discovered it the day before, a Friday, when the app showed “Starlink Disabled while moving.” Drive Tesla Canada reported the same on March 9. Both quoted Starlink’s support page: “Pausing your service with Standby Mode is not intended for in-motion use.”
| Item | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Standby Mode while stationary | Works, about 500 Kbps | Works, about 500 Kbps |
| Standby Mode while moving | Worked | Blocked |
| Standby price | $5/mo | $5/mo (unchanged by this) |
| Cheapest plan for in-motion use | Standby, $5/mo | Roam, from $50/mo |
Both reports said no advance notice was given.
Who it affected
- Travelers who used Standby on the road, often with a Mini, for messaging and navigation at low speed.
- Residential and Roam customers using Standby at a fixed spot were not affected; Standby still worked when stationary.
What it did to the cost
For someone who relied on Standby while driving, the cheapest in-motion option went from $5 to $50 a month at March 2026 prices, a $45 difference for each month on the road. Six travel months a year went from $30 to $300, or $270 more, if they moved to the entry Roam plan for those months and back to Standby in between.
For everyone else, nothing changed.
The same reports described in-motion speed limits: Roam and priority plans capped at 100 mph, with aviation tiers at $250 and $1,000 a month for higher speeds. Those are outside this site’s focus.
What stayed the same
- Standby’s price and its stationary low-speed data.
- Roam and Residential plan prices.
What happened next
Standby doubled to $10 a month in May 2026 (May 2026 post). For the history of Standby since it replaced free pausing, see the August 2025 post.
What to check yourself
- Read the current Standby support page for where and how it can be used.
- Add Standby months and travel months separately in the calculator to see the yearly effect.
What we don’t know
- The exact time the block took effect; reports date it from user discoveries.
- Whether any account types were exempt. The reports didn’t say.
- We could not open a March 2026 capture of the support page; quotes are as reported.
