Background. This change happened more than 90 days ago. It is kept as a dated record; check current prices before relying on any figure below.
What changed
On January 22, 2026, RV Mobile Internet reported that Starlink was ending the grandfathered Roam 10GB plan. The plan had been removed from sale in August 2025 (August 2025 post) but existing subscribers had kept it at $10 a month for 10GB of high-speed data.
Customers were given at least 30 days’ notice and three options:
| Option | Monthly cost | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Do nothing | $5 (Standby Mode) | Unlimited data at low speed |
| Switch to Roam 100GB with the offered discount | about $10 for two months, then $50 | 100GB high-speed |
| Pick another current plan | that plan’s price | as listed |
RV Mobile Internet described the discount as “an 80% discount for two months, which works out to the same $10/month as the Roam 10GB plan.”
Who it affected
- Only remaining Roam 10GB subscribers. No new customer could buy the plan after August 2025.
- Other Roam and Residential customers were not affected.
What it did to the cost
It depends on the choice:
- Default to Standby: the bill fell from $10 to $5, or $60 less a year, but high-speed data went to zero. Anyone who used their 10GB each month lost it.
- Move to Roam 100GB: two months at about $10, then $50. Over the first year that is about 2 × $10 + 10 × $50 = $520, against $120 a year on the old plan, about $400 more. (Roam 100GB later rose to $55; see the May 2026 post.)
- For an occasional user who needs some high-speed data a few weekends a year, there was no longer a $10 middle step. The choice became Standby most months and a full plan in the months you travel.
What stayed the same
- Standby Mode was still $5 a month at the time (it doubled to $10 in May 2026).
- Roam 100GB’s list price of $50.
- The report noted this was unusual: Starlink had kept the plan grandfathered for several months rather than ending it at once.
What to check yourself
- If you travel only a few times a year, compare “Standby most months + full plan in travel months” against a full plan all year in the calculator.
- The hidden fees guide covers Standby, and the glossary defines it.
What we don’t know
- Exact cut-over dates; they ran from each customer’s notice.
- How many subscribers were still on the plan.
- We did not see the notice email ourselves; wording is as reported.
