Before and after card: Starlink's monthly price went from $99 to $110 in 2022, and the kit for new orders from $499 to $599.

What changed

On March 22, 2022, SpaceX emailed Starlink customers that prices were going up, the first increase since the public beta opened in October 2020. Space Explored reported the email the same day and The Register followed on March 23. SpaceX’s stated reason, as quoted by both, was “excessive levels of inflation.”

Item Before After Change
Monthly service $99 $110 +$11 a month, +$132 a year
Kit, new orders $499 $599 +$100 once
Kit, existing deposit holders $499 $549 +$50 once

Space Explored rounded the old monthly price to $100; The Register gave $99, which matches our price history row.

Who it affected

  • New orders paid $599 for the kit from the announcement.
  • People holding a deposit from the waitlist paid $549 when their kit shipped.
  • Existing customers moved from $99 to $110 a month from May 9, 2022, per The Register.

The Register also reported two remedies for existing customers who didn’t want the new price: a full refund within 30 days of receiving the kit, and a $200 partial refund within the first year of service. We have no Starlink page from 2022 to confirm their exact terms.

What it did to the cost

For a new household in spring 2022, with no tax or shipping:

  • Year 1: from $499 + 12 × $99 = $1,687 to $599 + 12 × $110 = $1,919, or $232 more.
  • Year 3: from $499 + 36 × $99 = $4,063 to $599 + 36 × $110 = $4,559, or $496 more.

For an existing customer, the kit was already paid, so the increase was $132 a year.

What stayed the same

  • There was still a single Residential plan; tiers came later.
  • Data was described as unlimited, with no data cap.

What happened next

The kit price has since fallen well below $599, while the monthly price kept rising for the top tier. Our price history shows every later change, and will Starlink get cheaper? reads the record without forecasting.
