Before and after card: a Mini for travel with a new Residential Max plan meant buying one for $249 in June and July 2026, and a free rental after August 7, 2026.

What changed

On August 7, 2026, Tesla North reported that SpaceX had restored the free Starlink Mini kit rental for new Residential Max subscribers in the US and Canada. The perk had been dropped for new customers in June (June 2026 post).

$10 monthly kit fee on the home dish reported for new rentals waived on Max, per the report

Tesla North said Max customers receive an email claim link within a week to activate the Mini. Residential Max is $130 a month.

Who it affected

  • New Residential Max customers in the US.
  • Customers on Residential 100 or 200 Mbps were not offered the perk.
  • The report did not say whether Max customers who signed up during the June–August gap can claim it.

What it does to the cost

For a household that wants a travel dish anyway, the perk changes the comparison between tiers:

  • Without it: Residential 200 Mbps ($85) plus a bought Mini. At the then-reported $249 Mini price, year 1 is $1,020 + $249 = $1,269 before any Roam plan.
  • With it: Residential Max ($130) with the free Mini rental. Year 1 is $1,560 before any Roam plan.

So Max still costs more for the home plan alone ($45 a month, $540 a year). The perk narrows the gap only for households that would otherwise buy a Mini and pay for Roam on it, since the Roam plan on the free Mini is half price. A Roam 100GB plan at $55 becomes about $27.50, if the half-price rule applies to that tier as reported.

What stayed the same

  • The Residential Max price, $130 a month.
  • Prices for the other home tiers.
  • The Mini is a rental under this perk; it is returned if you leave.

What to check yourself

  • Read the claim email terms and Starlink’s optional-Mini support page before counting on the perk.
  • Compare Max-with-Mini against a lower tier plus a bought Mini in the calculator. Current prices are on our prices page.
  • Mini ownership costs are in the equipment cost guide.

What we don’t know

  • Whether the perk is time-limited; the report gives no end date.
  • Exactly which Roam tiers the half-price discount covers.
  • We could not open the Starlink support page ourselves; terms are as reported.
